Vietnamese female artist’s Exhibition Reveals the Beauty of Authenticity & Simplicity

Vietnamese contemporary artist Lê Trang invites art lovers in Hà Nội into a quiet, poetic inner world through her solo exhibition Mộng Giữa Chiều Hoa (Day Dream among Blossoms), currently on view at the Việt Nam Museum of Fine Arts—one of the country’s most important art institutions and a central destination within the Vietnamese art gallery system.

Rooted in Vietnamese cultural heritage yet infused with contemporary sensibilities, Lê Trang’s paintings resonate with both local and international audiences. Her work bridges memory and modern life, offering an intimate visual language that reflects the evolving voice of Vietnam’s contemporary art scene. In conversation with Hà Nội Mới, the artist reflects on her creative journey and artistic philosophy.

A Journey Shaped by Inner Necessity
Unlike many artists trained in academic fine arts programs, Lê Trang’s path into painting began organically. Painting, for her, was never a calculated career choice but a deeply personal need—a way to preserve emotions, reflect on life, and engage in an ongoing dialogue with herself.

“I began painting very early, simply out of love,” she shares. “Over time, it became a lifelong journey, one that requires sincerity and responsibility—not only to myself, but also to those who view my work.”
Her creative growth has been shaped by lived experience rather than formal instruction. Observing daily life, reading, visiting museums, engaging with fellow artists, curators, and collectors, and—most importantly—learning from each completed painting have all contributed to her artistic maturity. Rather than rushing toward technical mastery, she allows her practice to evolve naturally, guided by emotion and time.

Huế: A Quiet Influence
Born in Huế, the former imperial capital of Việt Nam, Lê Trang carries the spirit of the ancient city within her work. The Perfume River, mist-filled afternoons, and the unhurried rhythm of life have subtly shaped her sense of color, space, and mood.

“Huế teaches restraint,” she says. “Its beauty is never extravagant, but always profound.” This sensibility is reflected in her paintings—soft yet deep, contemplative yet intimate—capturing a quiet emotional resonance that defines much of her visual language.

The Warmth of Ordinary Life
Lê Trang once described her approach as painting “not completeness, but the warmth of simple things.” This philosophy lies at the heart of her work. Rather than striving for perfection or grand narratives, she focuses on emotional connection—moments of stillness, familiarity, and gentle reflection.
Her recurring subjects—flowers, nature, family, Vietnamese women, and everyday scenes—are rendered with sensitivity and restraint. “Beauty,” she believes, “exists in simplicity and authenticity, in small moments that touch something deep within us.”
Through her paintings, she hopes viewers can find fragments of themselves—without explanation or spectacle—just a quiet invitation to pause and feel.

From International Recognition to a Meaningful Homecoming
Before returning to Việt Nam, Lê Trang held successful exhibitions in major art centers such as London, Florence, and Paris. These international experiences, she notes, were less about asserting identity and more about listening, learning, and understanding her place within the broader global art landscape.
What moved her most was the emotional response from audiences unfamiliar with Vietnamese culture? Despite not fully understanding the context, many viewers still connected deeply with the serenity and emotion in her paintings—affirming her belief that genuine emotion transcends borders.

Day Dream among Blossoms: A Gentle Dialogue
Her exhibition at the Việt Nam Museum of Fine Arts marks a significant homecoming within the Vietnamese art gallery landscape. “Hà Nội gives me a sense of calm and depth,” she reflects. “Seeing viewers take time to stand before the paintings, to truly listen and feel, is deeply meaningful.”
The exhibition presents 36 paintings across four thematic collections:
Motherhood, exploring maternal love and intimacy
• Home, inspired by goldfinch nests and ideas of belonging
• Still Life, capturing quiet moments of everyday beauty
• Huế Heritage, depicting the landscapes, architecture, and cultural memory of Huế
Though distinct in subject, these collections are united by a shared emotional thread—humanity, memory, and the rhythm of daily life.

Moving Forward, Slowly and Sincerely
Returning to exhibit in Việt Nam brings both expectation and encouragement. Yet for Lê Trang, the pressure is constructive. “I don’t aim to become bigger or different,” she says. “I just want to remain honest.”
Looking ahead, she hopes to continue exploring her inner world with greater maturity, allowing change to arrive naturally rather than forcefully. In a fast-moving art world, her approach is refreshingly measured.
“For me,” she concludes, “painting is a long journey. I choose to move slowly—but with sincerity.”
